Making Money Moves: Things to Consider when accepting a job offer.

Accepting a new job offer and joining a new work community can be both exciting and daunting. It can be daunting walking into unfamiliar territory. A person's thoughts  can be consumed about whether they’ve made the right choice about the new opportunity. On the other hand, the excitement of a fresh start and new beginnings can be just what the doctor ordered. The career and money moves that we make can have an impact on our lives, such as our mental health, family, social lives, work life balance, professional and personal development. There are some that make the move for financial reasons alone and then on the other hand some make the move for a new, interesting, and challenging career. Do we consider the transition based on just the career or just the money? Are there other options to be considered? I always say that most of us are doing more work  or at work more than we are experiencing our personal lives.  I want to enjoy what I am doing and make an impact doing it. In addition, the financial freedom of being compensated well can allow me the opportunity to spend time with my loved ones, travel, and accomplish personal goals. If you can help to consider both the career and money aspect of your next professional move, I highly recommend it. Here are a few reasons why you should consider both the career and money aspect of your next career decision.

Mental Health- Careers can take up a lot of a person’s time and mental capacity. Imagine being in a career where you feel uncomfortable and for some, a lack of psychological safety and what this can do to one’s mental and physical health. We all respond to stress differently and if you are working or considering working in a place that you may not feel comfortable this can take a toll on you while at work but it can also begin to spill over into your personal life.

Loving a job and not being compensated well can take a toll on one’s mental well being also. One may have the option of considering different roles with an organization or asking for a promotion, but if that doesn’t work then considering other options will need to be a priority. You may think saying it’s a priority is a strong opinion but I think we can all agree, even the minimalist, that we need financial resources to survive in this world.

Growth- Goals are a part of upward mobility, whether this be in our personal or professional lives. Some write down goals and some have a mental map that they reflect on regularly. The size of the goal does not matter but where we work and how we are compensated can have a positive or negative impact on if and when we can achieve these goals. Professional goals can range from leading a project to leading a team. Personal goals can include saving money for that dream vacation or buying that new home. However big or small the goal, considering your growth while reflecting on taking the next career and money move can be a game changer.

Work Life Balance- I know what you’re thinking, here’s that balance topic again, lol. But hear me out,  there are overwhelming concerns with many trying to create the perfect balance between life and career. As we reflect on our career and money moves, considering a work life balance can be big for some. Why? Visualize being offered an amazing opportunity with great compensation (like 20k or more than you’re currently making) but it requires way more of your time (weekends or longer days). Will it be worth it? What are you sacrificing if you take this position? Let’s think about the opposite of this, you’ve just been offered an amazing opportunity that pays significantly lower, low enough that it will make an impact on the way you live your life. Is the impact worth the shift?
